Uretara Orchard had an existing 8ha of avocados (that Avoworks manage). The owners purchased another 10ha of adjoining pasture that had been used for livestock.
Avoworks was tasked with developing this land into avocados.
We have completed the first 3ha and planted 1000 trees in spring 2019. The plan is to develop the remaining 6ha in autumn 2020 – adding a further 3000 trees.
We have used a high density spacing of 8m x 4m and used clonal rootstock. Each block is less than 1ha.
This development will also be fertigated.
As for the existing 8 Ha of avocados – which are large old trees, the Avoworks team are slowly converting this to higher density by bringing tree height and size down, filling in gaps and replacing sick trees with clonals.
When complete, the property will be 18ha total under Avoworks’ ongoing management.
Currently, the orchard has an average annual yield of 12T per hectare (which has increased year-on-year under our management) and our goal is to lift this to 15T per hectare.
